1. Program Overview
The City of Burbank is doing its part to improve air quality for the residents of southern California. Recent scientific studies have confirmed that air pollution (smog) has a variety of bad effects on our health, including increased cardiopulmonary disease, reduced lung capacity in children and increased incidences of asthma and cancer. In addition the federal and California Clean Air Acts require that the state meet stringent air quality guidelines by 2010.
The City already operates a fleet of 12 electric vehicles (EVs), 24 natural gas vehicles (NGVs) and one hybrid (gasoline/electric) vehicle, with plans next year to increase this fleet of alternative fuel vehicles to 48. This year, the Public Works Department is pleased to enter a new phase in our commitment to the environment for the improved health and welfare of Burbank's citizens as it embarks on an exciting effort to commission a 24-hour public access compressed natural gas (CNG) station. This station will support the growing fleet of NGVs that will be utilized in all aspects of City fleet services. The station will also support non-City fleets including City Cab, Super Shuttle and EV Rentals, providing an even greater clean air benefit to our residents.
